Here it is. The crappy drawing of you as an umbrella.
I know your name’s written in Kanji, but A: Idk how to write it, and B: that’d change the meaning of the word, no?
You did great...?
#star☆speeches#asks!☆#//from my understanding; it depends on context#//cause spider and cloud share the same pronunciation I believe#//so in order to tell what one means depends on context#//unless its a name

It's a bit insulting that some people from my family still act surprised and put in doubt I can understand English??? Like, they know and are aware all of my clients are overseas and I write in English with them and have been doing so for years, but apparently that I can watch yt in English and actually understand everything?? Mind-blowing 🤯 bet they don't even think me capable of writing this rant lol
It wouldn't be upsetting if like, no one of them spoke it, but almost all of them at least understand it, and all their kids (about my age) are fluent so I don't get why they act so surprised I'm fluent as well )):
Like they have seen me hold whole convos with my American BIL , despite the fact his accent is so terrible most of them don't understand him??
(For context, I've been reading/speaking what I think is fluent English for 8+ years and then another 7 years of bad English, as I learned by myself)
#like ok im aware my pronunciation is not great but that aside#i understand it perfectly well and when i dont its for the same reasons i wouldn't understand it Spanish either

one day I wish I could actually like understand songwriting especially for theatre so that I can I dunno actually put to use the random tunes I have in my head that just spontaneously appear while I'm doing the most mundane of shit. anyways patron has the concept of an opening number now
#im gonma call it Silakbo#the gist of this is um LOOK TO REALLY EXPLAIN WHAT PATRON IS UMM#understand that patron was originally two separate musical ideas whose events occur At The Same Time To Teach Other#so like yea same universe#Patron (pronounce it in the Filipino way) is about modern student activism in the philippines and the nitty gritty of it#Patron (english pronunciation) is about a young filipino playwirght struggles to find their voice in an american landscape (new york)#especially in the context of the events of Filipino Patron#both discuss what it means to be a young filipino revolutionary in this day and age#so um i first thought of this when i was 17-18 - and now im 20 and like the masochist i am i have decided to have them become one project#dual protagonist - one a new and rather sheltered stude of UP Diliman and one decorated young progressive writer in New York#the former is a journey of looking beyond privilege and what it really means to be among the masses#the latter is a story of how privilege blinds - and how susceptible we are to american neoliberalism#that it dulls once sharp pens + the irony of succumbing to such amidst environment and communities that scream for resistance#and whatever one protag does affects the other protag - whatever happens in america affects philippine events and vice versa yay#anyways openign number Silakbo is the arrival of these two protagonists to their respective settings - both with their own musical styles#(UPD protag progresses from broadway belts to pinoy hiphop - NY protag progresses from pinoy hiphop to broadway belts) (this is A Clue)#and most of UPD protag songs will be sung in Filipino while NY Protag will um progressively grow into being fully English#and silakbo can be used synonymously with storm so its basically a storm is coming who's gonna bring it#a change is approaching who's gonna chase it#tbh this out of all of my works is gonna be inspired heavily from lmm's work because tbh this is gonna be a beast to even conceptualise#so um yea thats a mini patron ramble woo hope its um understandable at worst 😭#personal shit#also yes the NY storyline is based on um once progressive Filipinos becoming subservients to conservative and harmful politics#either out of ignorance or power or simple nonchalance#i can name a lot of namess gjdjd

Actually interesting tidbit re: your languages comic! In game it’s implied that Kazuichi can speak/read English bc he reads a sign in English to Hajime! Although I always kind of just imagined he picked it up from watching TV/Movies and isn’t super fluent
Yeah lots of ppl pointed that out and admittedly I plain forgot. But i do think it makes sense that he taught himself through manuals and the internet, so he's better at reading it than most, but when it comes to listening to (the hurried, limp, molasses-like American) English that's where he fumbles. Seeing the words makes sense, hearing eybuddyowyadowein is another. Also being HoH post-game doesnt help.
#not an art#Listen. I'm very fluent in English it's my second language. But the way you Speak vs Write is fuckinfg worlds apart okay#I come from a very straight-forward pronunciation language (like japanese!) and its SO different.#Same with Spanish just for the pure Speed of it. Can I guesstimate some spanish written word? Yea! Can I HEAR shit? No.

for the past couple years ive been slowly. slowly learning beginners japanese and its very fun and im enjoying it a lot but also it has made me painfully aware in ways i wasnt before of how much my specific vaguely ontario accent makes me make out sloppy style with my vowels. i am going at those vowel's tonsils. i am doing things to diphthongs you wouldnt even believe.
#come and meet the letter people. come and visit the familyyy#literally like i dont mind my ontario accent coming through my japanese thats okay BUT i do care about making sure im saying what#im actually trying to say. and sometimes without realizing my vowels have left off somewhere else in the middle of my word#turning it into some manner of other word. i accidentally said picasso bought the mona lisa instead of painted it the other day <3#i dont mind my mistakes but like. i still wanna do my best!!!!#its blowing my mind though. okay as an anglophone here the only way we'll learn anything about our own language is by#1) just having a natural interest in linguistics in general and/or 2) learning a new language#much to my mothers frustration when she came here in the 70s not knowing any english. even the english speakers couldnt help her#BUT luckily i was both interested in linguistics and learning new languages so i got to learn more things after preschool LOL#but like i remember taking french throughout highschool and being like. wait a god damn minute. i understand english grammer now?#it was bizarre. learning japanese phonetics as well has made me realize what on earth i do with my vowels. actually the entire way i talk#i didnt pay much attention to it but in my head i hear everything as my voice but with perfect north american man radio voice pronunciation#which it turns out. is not what my actual voice sounds like. its not even thaaat different its just different Enough. uncanny valley accent#although the reason i specify vaguely with my vaguely ontarian accent is because#in my area half of the native english speakers say stuff one way and the other half a different way. like within the same neighbourhoods#people always giggle at the way i say bagel. in my head i do picture it as bey-gul. but the second it lease my mouth its become BAG-ul#no one in my familiar says it like that. i dont know where it came from. i cant even stop it. im forever BAG-ul. forever.

It has to be your daughter Akiko. It's her fate.
#柄本佑#tasuku emoto#光る君へ#hikaru kimi e#1x26#made by me#fujiwara no michinaga#藤原道長#A CHICHIUE#I'm obsessed with the quiet harsh voice he used#there are so many Akiko's in this family#different kanji but same pronunciation#tbh this part of taiga dramas always make me sick bc women#especially young ones#in the eras they were in. are not being talked about AS HUMAN BEINGS#they were forced to marry some powerful ministers (& their sons) or the mikado at age 13 or 14#they are literally trade bargains for power#it's more ironic in this show because most of the women are stronger than their fathers and brothers#although I believe that michinaga's truly worried about his daughter's happiness in life#he still talked about her in that tone#as if she's just a thing that he could trade to get the country back on its right track

hii! mustn’t be afraid nonnie here .. your words are absolutely wonderful seriously!! Thank you for putting so beautifully.. so here’s another one..
What’s with the deal of “speCIFICITY”? I mean it’s once again, loving improvised by mr Hardy and we would never know why (I guess?) but given in A/E context I feel like it’s either because of one of their past incidents (idk may be once Arthur didn’t take something eames specifically asked for or sth) or OR eames making fun of the using fancy word by Arthur who is actually from a working class family in contrary to eames being from a family who uses such words quite often? Or what do you think? Have a lovely day!!
Hello nonnie and welcome back!!! Thank you for both questions, they're very thought-provoking!! <3
I must say I've always loved the idea that 'specificity' is the latter scenario. I'm convinced of the idea of street-rat Arthur who is self-taught, who doesn't have a fancy education -- mispronounces words/names accidentally, isn't always grammatically correct, despite often being the smartest person in the room. And that, no matter Arthur's attempts to appear refined, and how he can fool everyone else, Eames can tell how rough he is around the edges from a mile away. Maybe when they first met Arthur was seemed read, well-travelled, but gave his inexperience and unconventional education away by mispronouncing words like homage, ingénue, or gist with a hard 'g'. Maybe Arthur can cite pi to the nth place but has never read Vonnegut.
It's not that Eames thinks Arthur is, or has ever been, dumb, that he's not intelligent. It's just that Eames remembers how far Arthur's come, but is also very much the same. He's still that same twenty-something who hates Sunday drivers and will flip off a belligerent stranger on a crowded street and drink cheap, bottom-shelf liquor to save a dime. Now he's just dressed better and can fool others to think he was born with a silver spoon.
Eames, it seems in the case of Arthur, cannot help pigtail pulling. We see him being a bit more of a lad when he's aiming for levity and genuinely taking the piss out of someone ("too much champagne, eh Yusuf?" and making Saito visibly uncomfortable with his forge) but with Arthur he is purposefully trying to rile him up, to poke and prod him until Eames gets prodded back. With 'specificity' and 'condescension' and kicking Arthur's chair, Eames isn't going in for a laugh for the sake of laughing, he's pre-pre-pre-pre courting. Classic 'pay attention to me' behaviour. Eames is exactly like a patellar reflex test - he knows exactly where to tap to get the reaction from Arthur he wants.
And then Arthur looks at Eames with impatience and that something in his eyes and Eames thinks ah, there you are.
#inception#arthur x eames#that being said#i love LOVE the idea of the first scenario too#like its just another one of their things#like 'mr eames' and 'merry chase'#that they bring back every now and then because it's their in joke#its the code of their history that takes a rosetta stone to decipher#obsessed either way#maybe arthur frequently asks eames to convert farhenheit to celcius or stones to pounds#just to watch the cogs spin behind his eyes#Maybe#if in proximity#Eames is the person he silently defers to for pronunciation the same way Eames asks him for quick answers on percentages.#just saying

-> engage the i dont care method
#leologisms#ok good night. YEAY.#its so not seriousssssss <- has 'taking it seriously' disease#i mean its a reflection of the larger societal perceptions of language and 'correctness of language' but also theres nothingggggg you can do#about that. before. oh i dont know. completely dismantling many many many intertwined systems. so. whatever.#this is about prescriptivism being the standard framework that people use to understand language#and 'purity of language' being aspritational#and english exceptionalism.#like. why is borrowing words and pronouncing them in a way that fits into the languages phonological system 'mangling'?#and this coming from the same kind of people (most people.) who go 'ha ha ha english is so fucked up pronunciation is so inconsistent'#ugh. whatever. i want to go to sleep and not talk about this more. goodnight
